About the position

As an Installation & Commissioning Technician in NEL Hydrogen, you will participate in the installation and commissioning of new hydrogen filling stations – all over the world. Usually, you work together one or more colleagues on-site and your responsibilities start when you arrive at the site, where local subcontractors may have started their work, and end when the station is put into operation. You should expect to work in an international technical environment with foreign customers, colleagues, and subcontractors with whom to communicate with. To be an Installation & Commissioning Technician, flexibility is required in relation to working hours and the amount of travel days. You will professionally report to our Installation & Commissioning engineer, and you should expect more than 175 travel days a year, typically 2-3 weeks on-site at a time. Today the most important areas for installation and commissioning are Europe, US, and South Korea, but new continents/countries are coming up.


  • Being the Supervisor on-site for both the project as well as the sub-contractors
  • Ensure that safety on-site is maintained during all activities, for everyone who works on-site;  Checking foundations, installing pipes and cables, electrical connections, hydraulics, cleaning of the system and final hydrogen filling of the station.
  • Ensure that on-site work is always carried out in accordance with the performed risk assessment and that safety always live up to the standards in accordance with Nel ‘Permit to Work’ (PTW) (PTW is Nel’s own certificate to carry out the work, so that the working environment is safe and so that all relevant internal and external safety rules are complied with.
  • Ensure that the associated documentation required for the work are carried out carefully and in accordance with the rules.
  • Participate in on-site approval activities with local authorities or third-party inspectors.
  • Carry out preparation for the installation and commissioning task, such as preparation of tools and spare parts/materials, unpacking of containers etc.
  • Support the Project Manager during the ‘Site Acceptance Test’ on standard products.
  • At the beginning of your employment, you will need to be trained as a Station Operator and during the work on-site, it is expected that you gather experience and knowledge and that you relay it back to Nel.


Required skills and abilities

Professional qualifications

  • You have a relevant educational background with experience in the Installation and Commissioning of complex machines or stations.
  • You have a strong, technically oriented mindset, are curious and can quickly understand complex technical systems to find possible technical errors and quality problems.
  • You are structured, consistent and follow work procedures in a safe and efficient manner.
  • You can work independently and in Teams and are very proficient in both written and spoken English.


  • A relevant technical education as an Electrician or Mechanics.
  • General understanding of work-safety-procedures.
  • Understand that communication with the customer is important.
  • Maintains an organized and clean work area in the workshop and on-site
  • Familiar with basic Windows IT applications such as Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.

It will also be an advantage if you have:

  • Basic knowledge in document management systems
  • Experience with installation and commissioning work e.g., in the Oil and Gas industry or similar, where high demands for safety is given.
  • Has worked with flammable gases and high pressure.
  • Experience with risk assessment
  • Good knowledge of remote control and monitoring of complex systems
  • Knowledge of working on hydraulic systems.

You job will mainly be on-site but when you are ‘at home’ your workplace will be Lind near Herning, where also our European Service Department is located. Your desk will be in our head office in Lind near Herning, in state-of-the-art facilities.
