Nel's 9 life-saving rules

At Nel, safety always comes first. Our 9 life-saving rules set the minimum expectations for everyone on site and provide clear, practical steps to prevent serious incidents.

Work with a valid permit when required
 

  • I will confirm whether a permit and/or SJA are required
  • I will ensure I am authorized to perform the work
  • I will ensure that I understand the permit
  • I will confirm that hazards are controlled, and it is safe to start work
  • I will stop and reassess if conditions change

Obtain entry permit before entering a confined space

  • I will confirm energy sources and media inlets are isolated
  • I will confirm the atmosphere has been tested and is monitored
  • I will check and use my breathing apparatus when required
  • I will confirm there is an attendant standing by
  • I will confirm a rescue plan is in place

Verify isolation and zero energy before work begins

  • I will ensure the right competence for the work
  • I will identify all energy sources
  • I will confirm that hazardous energy sources have been isolated, locked, and tagged (LOTO)
  • I will check whether there is zero energy, and test for residual or stored energy
  • I will notify others when I have returned equipment to service

Control flammables and ignition sources
 

  • I will obtain a work permit
  • I will identify and control ignition sources
  • I will confirm flammable material has been removed or isolated before work starts
  • I will confirm a gas test has been completed before work begins in hazardous areas, and will monitor continually
  • I will bring a qualified fire guard to monitor the work

Plan lifting operations and control the area
 

  • I will confirm that the equipment and load have been inspected and are fit for purpose
  • I will only operate equipment that I am qualified to use
  • I will establish and obey barriers and exclusion zones
  • I will never walk under a suspended load
  • I will set up barriers in the relevant area

Protect yourself against a fall when working at height

  • I will take caution when working from any height
  • I will use fall protection when working above 2 meters
  • I will inspect my fall protection equipment before use
  • I will secure tools and work materials to prevent dropped objects
  • I will set up barriers in the restricted area

Obtain authorization before overriding or disabling safety controls

  • I will understand and use safety-critical equipment and procedures which apply to my task
  • I will obtain a work permit /authorization before disabling or overriding safety equipment, and/or deviating from procedures
    crossing a barrier

Avoid injuries from chemicals
 

  • I will always use correct Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) when handling chemicals
  • I will regularly check the Safey Data Sheet for the chemicals I may be exposed to
  • I will ensure correct labeling and storing of chemicals

Identify and control mobile equipment to avoid hazards

  • I will always wear a seatbelt and keep to the speed limit
  • I will drive only within designated area
  • I will not use phones or operate devices while driving
  • I have a valid license and training to operate the vehicle
  • I will perform or make sure that daily safety checks of the vehicle/equipment are performed
  • I will keep a safe distance from pedestrians
