On-site hydrogen generation

Stop relying on scheduled hydrogen deliveries.

Nel’s on-site hydrogen generators use PEM electrolysis to produce high-purity hydrogen at your facility—helping reduce or replace cylinders, tube trailers and liquid-hydrogen deliveries.

Why facilities reconsider delivered hydrogen

The hydrogen is essential. The delivery chain is not.

Every delivery brings more than gas: supplier lead times, rental, transport, handling, stock checks and the risk that supply does not arrive when the process needs it.

A schedule you do not control

Your operation remains tied to supplier lead times, delivery windows and local availability.

Costs surrounding the gas

Cylinder or trailer rental, transport, surcharges, handling and emergency orders all affect the true cost of supply.

Repeated work for your team

Receiving, moving, connecting, checking and reordering hydrogen consumes staff time.

Inventory built around deliveries

More stored gas creates a buffer, but it does not remove the underlying dependence on external supply.
On-site generation turns hydrogen from a recurring delivery task into a utility produced at your facility.
How on-site generation changes supply

Generate hydrogen where you use it.

A Nel on-site hydrogen generator uses electricity and deionised water to produce hydrogen close to the point of use. Production can follow process demand, while buffer and backup arrangements are defined around the needs of the application rather than a delivery timetable.
1
Step

Connect site utilities

Provide electrical power and deionised water, with cooling and ventilation as required by the selected series and site.
2
Step

Produce hydrogen on-site

Generate hydrogen at the facility instead of ordering each new batch from an external supplier.
3
Step

Supply the process

Deliver hydrogen at the purity, flow and pressure specified for the selected model and application.

Greater control over availability

Plan hydrogen production around the process rather than a supplier’s delivery route.

Less delivered gas to handle

Reduce cylinder changes, bulk offloading and the amount of external hydrogen inventory required.

Defined gas quality

Use hydrogen produced to the specified purity, moisture and delivery-pressure requirements of the selected system.
From cylinder use to bulk supply

A compact range of PEM hydrogen generators for different levels of demand.

The appropriate system depends on consumption, peak flow, pressure, purity, operating pattern, site utilities and backup requirements. These examples show where each series is commonly relevant; they are not a final sizing recommendation.
S Series

S Series

Hydrogen Generator
For individual cylinders and smaller continuous requirements
Designed for laboratories, analysers, quality control and smaller process loads seeking to minimise cylinder storage and changeovers.
0.27–1.05 Nm³/h · 99.999+% purity · air-cooled
H Series

H Series

Hydrogen Generator
For higher continuous demand and recurring cylinder or bundle deliveries
A self-contained, factory-built range for generator cooling, laboratories and industrial applications requiring 2–6 Nm³/h.
2–6 Nm³/h · 99.999+% purity · automated, site-ready enclosure
C Series

C Series

Hydrogen Generator
For tube trailers, liquid hydrogen and larger industrial requirements
A self-contained range designed for high-purity hydrogen on demand and positioned as an alternative to the logistics and rental costs of bulk delivery and storage.
10–30 Nm³/h · 99.999+% purity · 30 barg delivery
Final system selection and project configuration require discussion of the application and site requirements.
Compare the supply models

Look beyond the price of the gas alone.

A useful comparison considers every recurring cost and operational consequence on both sides.

Delivered hydrogen

Availability
Depends on supplier lead times, delivery windows and local availability
Cost structure
Gas, rental, transport, surcharges, handling and emergency supply
Inventory
Stock is sized around delivery frequency and lead time
Daily work
Receiving, offloading, cylinder changes, stock checks and reordering
Control
Partly dependent on an external supply chain

On-site generation

Availability
Hydrogen is produced at the facility around process demand
Cost structure
Equipment or finance, electricity, water, service and site utilities
Inventory
Buffer and backup are defined around process criticality
Daily work
Automated operation supported by planned maintenance
Control
Production planning moves under site control
On-site generation is not automatically the lower-cost choice at every facility.
It becomes more compelling where delivered supply is frequent, costly, operationally disruptive or creates a significant storage and handling burden.

Common questions about moving hydrogen production on-site

At suitable sites, an electrolyser can reduce or replace routine cylinder, tube-trailer or liquid-hydrogen deliveries. Whether a separate backup supply is retained depends on the process, demand profile and required level of redundancy.
Nel’s S, H and C Series produce 99.999+% hydrogen, with delivery pressure and gas conditioning varying by series. Nel can determine which configuration is appropriate once the process requirements are understood.
The system requires electrical power and deionised water. Cooling, ventilation, installation space and electrical requirements depend on the series, model and site. These requirements are reviewed as part of the technical discussion.
The S, H and C Series can automatically adjust output as demand changes. Buffer storage, backup supply and redundancy can also be considered where uninterrupted hydrogen availability is critical.
No. The appropriate series depends on consumption, peak flow, pressure, purity and operating pattern. Approximate usage, cylinders per week or delivery frequency is enough to begin a conversation with Nel.
The comparison should include the complete delivered cost—not only the gas price, but also transport, rental, surcharges, storage and handling. On-site generation introduces equipment, electricity, water, maintenance and site costs, so the result depends on the circumstances of each facility.
